SSL FORMATION IN NIGERIA

The Sisters of St. Louis, arrived in Nigeria at the beginning of 1948. It was not until 1963 that they began recruiting young Nigerian girls for training as Sisters. A novitiate was started in Zonkwa, Kaduna State, on the 25th of March 1963 with the reception of four postulants, only one of the four survived and made final vows. On the 25th of August 1963, the novitiate in Akure, was also opened; Religious life especially for women, was seen as a taboo in the Northern and Western parts of Nigeria. This accounted for the few candidates who came in at the initial stage of the novitiates. Many of the candidates who came in at the initial stage did not persevere in their vocation. Sr. Dorothy Yayock in the North, and two in the West -Sr. Patricia Ebegbulem and the late Sr. Cecilia Adeniran, were the survivors of that initial stage. This led to closure of the novitiate in Zonkwa in the early seventies.  Read More You can also  Visit SSL International
