St. Louis Convent Lagos, began in
1980s, with the Sisters having interest in the work of the poor. As a resul=
t,
began the Samaritan project where they discovered Maji=
dun
which is presently called Lagos State Rehabilitation Training Centre Owotu Ikorodu. Later ther=
e was an
invitation from the Pro-Nuncio requesting for Sisters to work at the Nunciature. The work of the poor and Nunciature
grew, with that the Nunciature was moved to Abuja.=
Later in 2004, there was another development, where the card=
inal
Anthony Okogie built a training centre for the
Sisters of St. Louis.
SSL Lagos Sewing Cent=
re
St.
Louis Centre, Lagos is a Sewing Training Centre opened by the Sisters of St.
Louis in 2005, {the first of its kind in the Province} to train young girls=
and
women who have no skills and have no work. The aim is to provide them with
sewing skill and enable them establish themselves as seamstresses or find j=
obs
with those already established.
It
is hoped that if the project is successfully established and some income is=
got
from it, the money will be used for the poor. The beginning of this project=
was
not easy; just as it is with any new establishment. Some consultations and
visits to other sewing institutes were made. This was to gather ideas on how
best the project can be set up to achieve its aim. Eventually, the centre t=
ook
off on the 16th=
of October
2005; a dream came true. It has been a wonderful thing and
fulfilling experience for me. The support and encouragement from the Sister=
s,
friends and well wishers, empowered me towards the realization of this-proj=
ect.
However,
we are faced with some challenges and set backs that need attention, if the=
aim
of publishing the centre is to be realized. Some of these include:- .Inability to employ and retain workers for continu=
ity.
Very
few candidates apply for training; this could be due to the high standard of
living in as people would prefer to take daily paid jobs to meet up their
financial demands, rather than spent time in training.
There
is limited space and therefore no room for expansion to accommodate
more equipment needed to bring the centre to a
reasonable standard. It is hope when these difficulties are addressed, it o=
pen
up opportunities and empower many young women in acquiring skills to be
self-employed.
