Hospital is in Umudei Street. St
Mary's Hospital is a very old hospital of over 60yrs of age; it has made a =
very
good name. Then it was the only hospital in the whole of Bendel State,
now Edo and Delta, and since it is "=
;Mission" hospital, the general belief is 'you =
must
be healed' and it work out so. It was then ran by the Our Lady of Apostles
(O.L.A.) missionaries and expatriate Doctors. The hospital also ran a grade=
1
school of midwifery. After several years, development too overtook it.=

Delta State government provided hospital in eve=
ry
Local Government Areas, plus Local Government Health Centre for delivery and
immunization.. That wasn't just it, Doctors who work in the hospital before=
opened
their own clinics and dragged patients along. The Doctors in government
hospitals opened their own private clinics as well and also dragged patients
along. The entire management of the hospital was very poor; as they did not
beat the taste of time hence this health institution ran down. The sisters =
of St. Louis came in=
to the
life of St. Mary's Hospital on the
15th of Sept. 2004. It seemed quite impossible to rehabilitate =
the
place. We took the first bold step of environmental sanitation which involv=
ed a
constant bulldozing and clearing of grasses, planting of flowers, doing some
brick, carpentry, painting work and the reduction of trees.

Thus far we have b=
een
able to change the outlook of the very vast
compound: We have =
also
done some Agricultural work i.e. planting of palmtrees which adds to the be=
auty
of the place and is also a short time plan to generate fund through the palm
fruits. Thanks be to God the first set of a hundred is already fruiting. We
have four hundred (400) palm trees within the compound.

The very poor ones=
who
are not able to pay their hospital bills sometimes mostly patronize the
Hospital. We have also been able to establish relationship with the Ogwashi=
-Uku
sons and daughters outside Delta
State and out of Nigeria=
, these
have given their support especially those in New York and London. A few individuals have also been
coming to give their support. This is heart- warming and encouraging. The
people show appreciation for our efforts to gradually put the place in orde=
r.

discouraging is the lamentation of some of the people over the hospital's p=
ast
glory which sometimes make one feel out of place,
and at other times=
too
we sympathize with them. Generally, we rejoice in God for the growth thus f=
ar,
our health care delivery in St. Mary is remarkable. The giftedness in each
sister of the
community, the sup=
port
from our Provincial Team, the co-operation of the staff and the good
relationship we enjoy with the people, the gift of friends who have been ve=
ry,
very supportive of us and lastly the visit of the Central Leadership Team of
the Sisters of St. Louis is worth a million, million thanks
