ST. LOUIS NOVITIATE
The St. Louis Novitiate is situated in Akur=
e, Ondo State, Nigeria,
West Africa. =
Bishop
W.R. Field, S.M.A of Ondo diocese and His Grace, Archbishop MC Carthy, S.M.A of Kaduna Archdiocese, having experienc=
ed the
Sisters of St. Louis since their arrival in Nigeria {1948} asked the Sisters
through the Mother-General Columbanus Greene,
Superior General to train African Sisters that would work in their respecti=
ve
dioceses.
St. Louis Novitiate, Ak=
ure
was then started on 25th August, 1963, with Sr. Anita Morley as the First
Novice Mistress. They were founded with the title “AFRICAN SISTERS OF=
ST. LOUIS". =
The
Novitiate building served as everything for the Sisters- bedroom, classroom,
laundry, kitchen, oratory, dining room, sitting room, recreation room e.t.c

As we all know, the beginning of anyt=
hing
in life is not always easy. Many young women entered the Novitiate at the v=
ery
beginning of its existence but left for one reason or the other. The reason
might not be too far fetched. The religious life was foreign to them and the
Sisters in charge of their formation were not accustomed to our African val=
ues
and culture.
Many other women joined=
in
the later years and survived. Among whom are Sr. Dorothy Yayock
from the Archdiocese of Kaduna=
and Srs. Patricia Ebegbulem and Cecilia Adeniran{R.I.P}
who became the first African Sisters of St.
Louis.
Meanwhile, Bishop Peter=
Sarpong of Ghana
had requested the Sisters to train some Ghanian
Sisters for him. In the succeeding years, Srs. Monica Adeya, Isabel Mann,
Bernice Broohm
{Ghana},
Christiana Arokoyo and Christiana Bernadette Essien {Ghana}
entered. Vocations were few but steady. The Novitiate served as the only
Novitiate for
both N=
igeria
and Ghana
known as the West Africa Region.
Bishop W.R. Field despi=
te the
low vocations, decided to build a Juniorate att=
ached
to the Novitiate between 1968, and 1970, to cater for the Junior Sisters in=
the
future. This was based on his faith and trust in the providence of God thou=
gh
in his own words he said "I am building this on the faith and trust of
Mother Anita” Coincidentally, this providence of God was also very de=
ar
to the Ancestors of the Sisters of St.
Louis. The Sisters, after First Profession were mo=
ved
to the Juniorate. This Jun=
iorate
has continued to be a blessing to us up till now as the Temporary Professed
Sisters come there for one programme or the other for their formation.=
This was the story unti=
l 1971
when the Sisters had an Identity crisis after making their first Vows. They
questioned where they belonged- African Sisters of St. Louis or Sisters of St. Louis, Juilly<=
/span> /
Monaghan. A lot of reflection, prayer and dialogue went into it and on
Pentecost Sunday, 1977, in the St.
Louis Chapel, Akure, the
African Sisters were integrated into the Sisters of <=
st1:place
w:st=3D"on">St. Louis, Juilly<=
/span>/
Monaghan.
Practically, all the Af=
rican
Sisters were trained in the Novitiate, Akure until, 1995, when Nigeria=
became
a Province and Ghana=
became a Region. To the glory of God, the Novitiate has turned out sixty ni=
ne
finally professed Sisters and thirty six temporary professed Sisters for th=
e Nigeria Province. All these young and vibr=
ant
women are engaged in various ministries both within and outside the country=
.
ACTIVITIES IN THE NOVIT=
IATE
We run a two- year prog=
ramme
in the Novitiate- Canonical year and apostolic year. The Novitiate has alwa=
ys
been a place where the Novices are trained holistically for the Religious l=
ife.
Thus, there are a variety of lectures to facilitate this. Amongst which are
lectures on Spirituality, Salvation History, Psychology/Human development,
Theology of Religious life, History of the Institute, Church History,
Scripture, Creation Spirituality, Liturgy, Sacred Music, Missiology
and African Traditional Religion.
There is also time in t=
he
Novitiate programme for the Novices to go on visitation to the homes of the
sick, the Aged, the Needy and the inmates of the Juvenile Remand Home where
they offer moral and psychological assistance.
